The original comic book store, founded by Jimmy Wu, was named Comics Underground back in 1989, while the young entrepreneur was still in college. The storefront was a mere stall in the basement of the local Busy Bee Mall, in Flushing, Queens, but it still attracted the attention of local collectors. Jimmy, partnering with his brother, Steve, decided to expand the business to include sportscards.

A street level storefront on Maiden Lane was established in 1992, and Chameleon Comics & Cards was born, attracting everyone from investment bankers to the delivery boys. Today Chameleon is one of the most reputable hobby businesses in New York.
